Good news for the fans of the legendary Trans Am. The car is set to return in 2016 as a brand new model. Unfortunately, unlike the first model, this new car will be based on the new Camaro. This means that the 2016 Pontiac Trans Am will share some of its design cues with it as well as its engines.
This is bad only for the fans of that pure breed model. For all the others this is actually quite good news because it will be a car based on the Camaro at a lower price. What needs to be also delivered is the great amount of power and performances that will allow it to compete with few new and quite powerful muscle car models currently available on the market.
2016 Pontiac Trans Am Price
The 2016 Pontiac Trans Am will be launched on the market at the end of 2015, which means it will arrive just in time to compete with the new Mustang as well as the new Camaro. It will be fresh and interesting so it could take a decent part of the market segment. The car will come at a base price of just $22,000 which means it will actually be quite a bit cheaper than the other two. For the price you will get just the basics but in this case that’s more than enough.
Let’s start our review with its engines. Being a Camaro based car, it will only come with two engines available for start. A 3.6 liter naturally aspirated V6 that will provide up to 305 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. Even though it is the same engine as in the Camaro, on the Trans Am it will rev just a bit higher which translates in slightly better acceleration. The bad news though is that the Trans Am is said to be limited at 155 MPH. There will also be a 6.2 liter V8 option that will give the driver around 420 horsepower and 385 lb-ft of torque which should suffice for most people. This engine will get the same limited top speed but even better acceleration.
Specs Of 2016 Pontiac Trans Am
Transmission wise, both of them will come as standard with a 6 speed automatic which is set to focus on comfort rather than fast gear changes and this is not that bad when considering the general purpose of the car. What we would also like to see includes supercharged 6.2 liter V8 monster, something that few muscle cars on the market will offer or already have in offer.
Its exterior will be quite similar to that of the Camaro when looking from the side, but both the front and back of the car will be completely different. The front will receive a new bumper, new headlights and fog lights that will include LEDs as well as a new grille while the back will receive a design that is inspired by that of the original Trans Am with round tail lights. It is important that the exterior stays true to the original models but still to offer new and modern features.
The interior of the 2016 Pontiac Trans Am on the other hand will be exactly the same as that found on the Camaro. The only changes over the Camaro are the badges and the steering wheel which will have a flat base rather than a fully round steering wheel. Expect to see all those features we are used to see in modern vehicles, this includes automatic climate control, touchscreen, navigation, quality audio system and similar.
