The Grand Caravan is the original American minivan being on the market for quite some time already. It is also one of the best-selling minivans in the World thanks to a great engine choice, sharp steering and a very low price which is usually lower than some medium size sedans, price at which the Caravan simply had no competitor at all. However, the car is quite old so Dodge already announced that they are going to discontinue the model by the end of 2015, meaning that the 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan might be dead. Or is it?
In fact, the Chrysler Corporation together with Fiat is developing what it seems to be a brand new minivan. It has already been confirmed that a new Lincoln Town and County is going to be available on the market but the new Grand Caravan has been left aside. However, even though the car hasn’t been officially announced so far, we strongly believe that a new model is in the works just because it was one of the bestselling Dodge models out there and that it will officially presented in the next few months.
2016 Dodge Grand Caravan Release Date
However, considering it will have a new chassis which will most likely be co-developed together with Lancia, the new Caravan is going to be slightly bigger as well as lighter. On top of that, thanks to the new platform, new engines are also expected as well as a plug-in hybrid which would fit the range very nicely. The price on the other hand is an unknown factor so far but considering the previous model was very cheap then it would be only natural for this car to be very cheap as well. An expected base price of the 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan would be under $25,000 which would still be very affordable.
Engine wise, the current 3.6 liter Pentastar is likely going to be kept as the main engine in the range because it is quite powerful at more than 280 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque and also incredibly smooth for a V6. On the 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan it is expected to use even less fuel than before thanks to the lower total weight of the car. Just like before, front wheel drive and a 9 speed automatic are going to be standard while an all-wheel drive system might finally become available on it.
The plug-in hybrid on the other hand is very likely to use an Alfa Romeo supplied 1.8 liter turbocharged inline 4 coupled to one or two electric motors and a set of batteries. These would allow for up to 70 to 100 miles of electric range while the petrol engine would act as a range extender. This still needs to be confirmed and we have few doubts about this because it would be a great turnaround for this model and this carmaker.
Redesigned 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan
Inside the new Caravan things are going to be quite a bit different because the car will inherit all the luxuries and comfort of the European model. In fact, even the base form is expected to come quite nicely equipped with premium cloth upholstery, soft-touch materials and even an 8 inch infotainment system. While it may not seem like much, take into account that 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan is one of the cheapest cars in its class. Optional extras are likely going to include a satellite navigation system, electric seats, a swivel mechanism for the middle seats and also a dual zone automatic climate control system.
The outside of the 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan on the other hand hasn’t been revealed to the public just yet so we really don’t know what to really expect from the car. However, considering some people managed to get a few shots of a prototype, it seems that it might borrow few lines from the Charger and few design elements for its front end as well as some parts from the Durango. These would make it look quite aggressive which would be a nice touch because it would give the car a bit of spice.
